I chose this photograph because it captures the quiet yet powerful pulse of childhood—the kind of joy that exists regardless of the world around it. Three children smile through a discarded tire, their faces full of energy, curiosity, and life, while an abandoned aircraft stands silently in the background. The contrast between the forgotten aircraft and the children’s vibrant expressions became the heart of this photograph. One represents something left behind; the other represents a generation that continues to move forward.
In 2021, work took me to Lingshui, Hainan, where I encountered the local Tanka fishing community. One day, a little girl leaned out from the window of a floating home—and for a fleeting moment, this image came into being.
