Editor’s Note:

Christopher Cucufate is a California-based photographer adept in film photography and always carries his Simera 35mm lens. Using the Simera 35mm f/1.4 lens, he captures the stunning landscapes where he wanders the streets of California and finds solace. With six years of photography experience, he firmly believes that the key to becoming a unique photographer lies in being true to oneself. Let’s dive deeper into who he is and how he views Thypoch.

Personal Information

Thypoch: What is your profession? Where do you live?

Christopher Cucufate: I’ve been managing a restaurant for about a few years, and I live in Los Angeles, California.

Thypoch: When did you get your first camera, and what drew you to photography?

Christopher Cucufate: I got my first camera in mid-2017 to early 2018, which was a Sony A7RIII. I was deeply inspired by Peter McKinnon at the time. I watched every YouTube video he made, along with the thoughts and ideas behind photography. The drive to create images or tell stories gave me inspiration, so I learned a lot from YouTube during my lack of photography experience.

Thypoch: How would you describe your photography style, and why are you here?

Christopher Cucufate: The best way I can describe my photography skill is to say it tells a story . Sometimes I achieve this, and other times it might be what I feel and what captures my eye. Some days I notice more than others, so I try to capture that moment and continually improve that style. Since I picked up the camera, I’ve been doing this, and I’ve never given up on my craft, from photography at Disneyland to now shooting film. It fulfills me, and I’m proud of the time and dedication I put into improving myself.

Thypoch: Do you prefer shooting randomly or planning a theme in advance?

Christopher Cucufate: Over time, I’ll pick up my camera and see what I can create, but occasionally I’ll think of a theme or an idea until I’m satisfied with the results.

Thypoch: Why do you enjoy film photography, and do you develop/scan film yourself?

Christopher Cucufate: Film photography was a surprise; it’s an unexpected love I never anticipated. It’s the simplest thing I can do with film. Slow down and appreciate the craft. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to develop, only scan. I tried developing when I was younger, and it didn’t go well, so I rely on film labs and am quite satisfied with the results.

Thypoch: What do you think is the most important element for a unique photographer?

Christopher Cucufate: The key to being a unique photographer is to be yourself. I know there are many artists like street photographers or car photographers, but I think it’s important to take inspiration from others, appreciate the craft, and turn it into your own thing, but never claim to be better than anyone else, always stay humble.

Thypoch: Describe in one sentence how photography makes you feel or the change it brings, if possible.

Christopher Cucufate: Eye-opening. It’s where my zen is, my safe harbor, and a craft that helps me and supports me in tough times.

Story with Thypoch

Thypoch: What are your overall impressions of Thypoch?

Christopher Cucufate: I’ve been using the 35mm 1.4. I’m impressed with its craftsmanship; even the lens hood and cap are super refined. The quality of the glass amazes me, and even though I haven’t used f/1.4, it’s nice to know it’s there for me because whenever I need to shoot in low light—though I haven’t encountered that yet—it continues to surprise me! I’ve been using it for a whole month, and it has accompanied me along the West Coast. Honestly, I would purchase all the other lenses and future products from this company.

Thypoch: What are your expectations for the future development of Thypoch?

Christopher Cucufate: They won’t drop the ball; they will only keep pushing forward. I’m not worried about their relationship with supporters, but I want them to continue enhancing their builds. Pushing boundaries further.
